Francisco Serra Lopes, PhD in Humanities (Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona, 2010), is a member of the Centre for Comparative Studies (University of Lisbon) and of The Haas Society - Studies on Aesthetics and Religion (Pompeu Fabra University).
He holds a degree in Portuguese and French Philology (2001), a Master's degree on Comparative Literature (2004), both from the University of Lisbon, and an Advanced Studies degree on Aesthetics and Theory of Arts in Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona (2008).
As a comparatist, his main research area is Hermeneutics, specialising in the theoretical development of Negative Hermeneutics in Literary Theory, Mysticism and Relations.

Valerie Henitiuk is Lecturer in Literary Translation and Associate Director of the British Centre for Literary Translation at the University of East Anglia. Following a PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Alberta (Canada), she went on to conduct research at Columbia University in New York City, supported by a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council postdoctoral fellowship before taking up this post in England. Honours include the inaugural SSHRC Postdoctoral Research Prize (2005) and the Governor-General’s Gold Medal (University of Alberta Spring Convocation, 2005). Her work on gendered translation, east/west translation, and world literature in general has been published in such venues as META, the Canadian Review of Comparative Literature, and Comparative Literature Studies. An article forthcoming in the new Routledge journal entitled Translation Studies examines modern western adaptations and imitations of the Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon, focussing on how they underpin or resist Orientalizing themes and attitudes. Her monograph, Embodied Boundaries: Images of Liminality in a Selection of Women-Authored Courtship Narratives, which discusses authors as diverse as Murasaki Shikibu, Marie de France, Elizabeth Inchbald, and Edith Wharton, will soon appear in the Studies in Liminality and Literature series from Gateway Press.

Short description:
Maria Sofia Pimentel Biscaia took her master degree in English Studies at the University of Aveiro in 1999. Her dissertation was on the grotesque strategies and themes in the work of Angela Carter and Salman Rushdie. In 2005 she completed her doctoral thesis entitled Dialogical Readings of the Grotesque: Contemporary Texts of the Excess. At the moment she is undertaking the post-doctoral project Dicionário Terminológico de Crítica Literária Pós-Colonial. Along with other objectives, the purpose of this dictionary is to standardize postcolonial terms in Portuguese which have been translated from the English with no terminological validation and those terms which are specific to the Portuguese context. The academic interests of Maria Sofia Pimentel Biscaia refer to the theories of the carnivalesque-grotesque and the psychological grotesque in postcolonial writings in English and in literature by women and they focus on such areas as the abject body, the maternal matrix, metamorphosis, violence, sacrificial rituals and social practices, and terror. During her research she has also become interested in literatures that reflect similar approaches which range from Latin American or African magical realist texts to subversive rewritings of fairy tales. These studies have been carried out in English given the absence of a suitably validated discourse in Portuguese in postcolonial literature. Thus lately her interests have expanded beyond the literary world and merged with terminology so as to compensate this gap in the future for all scholars writing on the subject of postcolonial literature in Portuguese.

In the past I have taught in the United States as Professor of German and Comparaive Literature (1988-2000). I am currently serving as editor of Comparative Critical Studies, the peer-reviewed house journal of the British Comparatve Literature Association.
